History
of Pittsburg
(Indian Stream Republic)
Pittsburg was once an independent nation
known as the Indian Stream Republic. In 1832, the United States
and Canada could not agree on which country owned the land, so
the settlers of the region established their own nation, even
creating their own coins, stamps and government. In 1836, the
Republic yielded to NH and was recognized by treaty as United
States territory. Pittsburg gets its name from William Pitt, an
English statesman and an advocate for the 13 colonies.
A visit to the Pittsburg Historical Society
or to the Poore Homestead on Route 145 will take you back in time
to those days of struggle and hardships for our ancestors.
